Empowering Youth to Restore Riparian Habitat in the Upper Black Creek Watershed at the Genesee County Park and Forest

gcl

East Bethany, NY – Genesee County is excited to announce the “Healthy Headwaters:
Empowering Youth to Restore Riparian Habitat in the Upper Black Creek Watershed” project
that will restore a section of Black Creek within the Genesee County Park & Forest in East
Bethany, NY.
Genesee County Parks, Recreation & Forestry, in partnership with a diverse coalition of
community organizations, will apply ecosystem based management techniques to restore 140
linear feet of riparian habitat in the headwaters of the Upper Black Creek watershed at Genesee
County Park & Forest. The project will utilize a nature-based approach to reduce erosion along
an often-visited section of the Creek within the public park. Genesee County students and
volunteers will be involved in every step of the restoration process, providing hands-on
experiences that not only ensures the success of the project but also valuable educational
opportunities that inspire future environmental leaders.
This project is made possible through the New York’s Great Lakes Basin Small Grants Program,
administered by New York Sea Grant in partnership with the New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation, under a prime agreement (CM04068) with Cornell University.
The project will be completed in 2026. Those that wish to learn more or volunteer should visit
the parks website at www.geneseeny.gov/parks or the Genesee County YouTube channel at
