At first glance, the enclosed photo looks like a dirty window.
These tiny handprints have remained on this window for the past 21 months. They belong to a little boy who was 4 years old at the time. To those of us lucky enough to know Crossroads House, these are the most tender reminders of why we do this work. His loving mother was living here with us at Crossroads House during her final weeks. That little boy spent lots of time here; and when he needed to burn off a little energy, his grandmother would bring him upstairs to run up and down the hall.
Given the incredibly unfair young age at which his sweet mama passed, this loss was profoundly sad for all of us. But we cannot help but feel blessed to have been part of her journey, even for a short time.
This is not a dirty window. It is a beautiful and sacred reminder that the people that we are fortunate enough to care for leave an imprint on all of us.
As you hold this letter in your hands, another family in our community is preparing to say goodbye to someone they love. They too need the comfort, dignity, and compassion that your gifts make possible.
We are now caring for our 689th resident—a neighbor, a friend, a member of our community whose final days deserve gentleness, peace, and human connection. In our small two-bed home, every room holds many stories, laughter, tears, whispered goodbyes, and deep gratitude.
We provide 24/7 care at no cost to families. Not because it is easy. But because no one should face a financial burden while facing profound loss.
Our caregivers and doulas bathe, comfort, sing, pray, hold hands, and sit vigil. They witness the final Thanksgiving dinner, a last “I love you,” a quiet letting go after 70 years of marriage, or the heart-shattering goodbye between a child and parent.
These moments don’t come with a price tag. But the care required to support them does.
Crossroads House receives no government funding and no insurance reimbursement. We exist solely because compassionate people like you choose to ensure that every family who walks through our doors receives care without ever receiving a bill.
Your gift isn’t just a donation. You are holding a hand at 2 a.m. You are easing pain, protecting dignity, and giving a family precious time. You are keeping this sanctuary alive for the next person who needs it - maybe someone you know.
