The Daily News was among the winners in the New York News Publishers Association’s 2024 Awards for Excellence competition.
The annual contest recognizes journalistic and advertising excellence among the Association’s member newspapers.
The Daily News won for Distinguished Feature Supplement in the under 10,000 circulation class for a special supplement that included information and feature stories that prepared readers for the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse.
The “GeneSEE the eclipse” supplement was published March 3, 2024, about a month before the four-county GLOW region experienced its first total solar eclipse in nearly 100 years. The section was also included in The Livingston County News.
Judges, in their remarks, called the section “a smart and lively readers’ guide to the 2024 eclipse, full of facts, stories, colorful photos and more.”
“It’s easy to read before, on the day of and as a keepsake for years to come,” the judges said.
The 16-page section included a guide explaining what to expect during a total solar eclipse and unique phenomenon to look for while viewing the event, and information on times that the eclipse would be occurring across Genesee County. The section also included information on special events related to the eclipse and previously published stories on a comet that was expected to be visible, anticipated weather conditions, and how Batavia embraced the 1925 total solar eclipse — the last one visible in our region.
The Distinguished Feature Supplement category looks for winning entries that demonstrate imaginative layout and design; creative use of headlines; solid, staff-written articles; high-quality photos relating to a common feature; show knowledge of and connection with the newspaper’s community; and must contain primarily locally produced content.
Contest judges selected winners from 365 entries submitted by 19 New York State daily newspapers.
Only one winner per circulation class was selected in each of the contest categories.
Newspapers competed against one another in five circulation classes: Under 10,000; 10,000 to 24,999; 25,000 to 49,999; 50,000 to 75,000; and Over 75,000.
The awards were announced May 29.
